Music Therapy

Has it ever happened to you that you are out for an important meeting or an interview and are stressing your brains out and then you suddenly hear a music that makes you a lot calmer? Does it take you back to a certain memory or makes you happy? It’s like an impossible task to find a person who does not has a deep connection with a particular music. Music is more closely related to health and healing than you think.
Music therapy is a form of musical art that helps to improve the psychological, social as well as physical well- being. This therapy is performed by trained therapists and is often hired in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centres, nursing homes and as well as correctional facilities. The therapists are usually well trained musicians who have deep knowledge how music an evoke emotions in people. There are some direct advantages to music therapy and the benefits acquired by it.
Anxiety and stress relief
A person who is suffering from anxiety problems can gain benefits from the music therapy. The music helps calm the brain and releases all the stress and anxiety from it. It is also used before any surgery, if the patient is feeling panicky or in anxiety. It lessens the discomfort.
Autism and speech disorders
Music affects the brain nerves and can help people recover from any trauma or brain injury. Music therapy may be helpful in curing autism and lost speech as the music works its way to the left side of the brain helps it work again through many sessions. The patients can hear the music and sing or hum along before forming proper words.
It helps in rehabilitation
Music needs practice and requires you to stick to your routine while spending a musical time with yourself. As mentioned earlier, music affects the brain and thus helps physically, psychologically, emotionally, functionally and also in a cognitive way while rehabilitation programs.
Depression, insomnia and personality disorders
In the 21st century, depression and insomnia is a common problem amongst people. Due to various problems, people tend to go in depression. They have insomnia which further worsens your health. Personality disorders can also be cured by music therapy. These are all mental disorders which can be cured through music therapy as music has direct effects on your brain.
It relieves pain
Experiments have shown that music plays a very important role in aiding to the pain. Music decreases the pain perception and therefore reduces the pain from the person’s brain. It can range from headaches to severe chronic pains. It is also used to reduce the pain of a mother during labour.
The use of instruments and vocals in music therapy makes the person’s brain experience several emotions and activates its cognitive properties. The patients sing along or respond to the music and hence can get cured accordingly. Music therapy has been majorly used since the last century and is now used in many health centres around the world.
