You must be very much familiar with this one since it is the most common guitar and you this is the one you would be using when you start learning. It has 6 metallic strings and has a symmetrical body or can also have cut-aways to make it easier to reach the frets which are high.

2. Electro-Acoustic Guitar

As the name suggests, it is an acoustic guitar which is used electrically. It can be attached to the amplifier and can be used for a larger audience. But that is not equivalent to putting a mic in front of the guitar because the electric guitars make a whole lot different and "electric" sound when played.

3. Semi-Acoustic Guitar

A semi-acoustic guitar is the one with a slimmer body that the normal acoustic guitars. It can be explained as something in the middle of an acoustic and an electric guitar. They are slim like the bodies of electric guitars but also are hollow-bodied as the acoustic ones. The sound produced is lower than acoustic when it is unplugged.

4. Electric Guitar

They are slim bodied solid guitars without a hollow body, unlike an acoustic guitar. Since the sounds produced by an electric guitar is quite low, you''''ll probably need an amplifier to make it sound audible and crisp. They are also made of wood and usually have 6 strings but there are electric guitars with 12 strings available. They are mostly used in rock, heavy metal or pop genres.

5. Bass Guitar

Bass guitar is the ones, as the name suggests, are for the notes in the lower octaves. In the old days, all a bass guitar could be thought of was like a big double bass guitar with a huge body used in orchestras. But now, bass guitars are smaller and portable than the ones in those days. They have thin bodies with usually 4 strings but bass guitars with 6 strings are also available.

6. Classical or Nylon String Guitars

These are the types of guitars which have nylon strings instead of metal ones. These are mostly used when you are performing country music They are comparatively smaller than the acoustic guitars. It is a perfect start-up guitar for kids because it is also available in smaller sizes with lesser strings. So you can take it to a campfire with friends and family and get the stage going.

These were the basic types of guitars used in music and there can be other types of guitars that can be comprised from these. So the next time you go to buy a guitar, know what your genre is and what type of guitarist you would like to become and buy accordingly.
